Winterizing your Car

It is always important to make sure you and your car are ready for winter. Getting your car ready can help prevent getting stuck in the wintery cold and having supplies for if you do get stuck can help you stay safe until help arrives.
Here are a few things to do to be prepared for winter driving:
~Have your vehicle inspected before the cold winter months hit. You want to make sure your battery, tires, engine oil, coolant, wiper blades, belts and hoses are all in good condition for winter. The harsh cold can be tough on your car and it’s important to make sure it’s ready.
~Check your spare tire – be sure it is in decent shape and fully aired up. Also be sure you have the tools required to change a tire should you need to.
~It doesn’t hurt to keep some engine oil, winter windshield washer fluid, and coolant in your trunk.
~Be sure to have an ice scrapper and having an extra pair of gloves, hat, and a blanket for an emergency situation doesn’t hurt either. Flashlights and flares can come in handy if you do get stuck on the road and visibility is low.
~If you have a 4WD vehicle it’s important to check to be sure everything in the 4x4 system is working correctly before the snow starts to fall.
~Check your heat and defrost settings. You want to make sure they are working correctly before needing them. Condensation can build up on the inside of your windows, the defrost system blows dry, warm air on the glass to clear the fog. It’s important your heat is working properly for the upcoming winter months.
~Keeping your gas tank full can help prevent problems in the bitter cold. Condensation can build up on the inside walls of your gas tank. This water will eventually drip down and being heavier than gasoline will sink to the bottom. If the tank is low or near empty this water can make its way into your lines and freeze in the winter causing your car to not start. Be sure to always check your gas gauge throughout the winter.
